Business owners visiting this site will no doubt be well aware of social networking sites as a PR tool and will already be busy posting links to press releases, blogs and helpful articles.

But online PR isn’t just about the written word. With high speed broadband, it is now feasible to present your PR message in a visual and/or audio format as well. Done well, these can be more effective in engaging visitors, plus editors like it because they want to offer a variety of content.

Some tips:

  • Vodcasts and podcasts have to be short, just 2-3 minutes long is good.
  • What you record is up to you. You might experiment with a customer talking about the benefits of your product or service, rather like a mini case study. Or you could give practical advice on how to do something you’re the expert on, such as pruning a rose bush if you’re a gardener, or getting the most out of your smart phone if you’re a mobile phone specialist.
  • Keep promotion of your company to a minimum and make educating /informing your audience the main goal.
  • If it’s important news like major market research, you could summarise with a few snappy soundbytes and offer a link to the video/podcast with your press release.
  • You can record them anywhere, but do be careful about the quality as a poorly recorded and edited clip will reflect badly on your image.
  • Get a colleague or friend to give you feedback before you publish or offer to an editor.
